Even doctors need doctors. Many family physician will tell you that health outcomes are much better if you establish a relationship with a doctor when times are good, rather than in the middle of a health crisis. The Physician Health Program of BC (PHP) strives to ensure all physicians stay healthy and well. One concern many residents have expressed is that it is difficult to find a family physician, especially when doing out-of-town clinical rotations.
In response to the above, the PHP has compiled a confidential registry of doctors across the province who are willing to take other physicians as patients. This is a very valuable service as many of the physicians in the PHP's registry have closed practices but have agreed to take on new physician patients.
Residents in need of a family physician may contact the PHP and they will be helped to connect with a family physician. The PHP will ask a few questions about your specific preferences and then consult the confidential list of physicians for a good geographic match. Family physicians will then be contacted to ensure that they are still available to accept the referral. Following this, you will be given the physician's information so that you may contact them.
