What is PAR-BC?
The Professional Association of Residents of BC (PAR-BC) is a trade union certified by they Labour Relations Board to bargain collectively on behalf of Residents in the Province. PAR-BC's objective is the regulation in British Columbia or relations between the employer and employees through collective bargaining. See the About Us section for more information.
Who governs PAR-BC?
A Board of Directors governs PAR-BC; most of whom are elected annually by the membership. All members are encouraged to participate in elections by running, nominating and voting. The Board is governed by the Constitution and By-laws. These can only be amended at the Annual General Meeting.
How do I join PAR-BC?
Membership is mandatory for all residents whose training is funded by the Ministry of Health. The completed dues deduction form must be submitted to Vancouver Coastal Health Payroll as per the instructions in the resident appointment package.
Can I opt out of my dues?
Union dues are mandatory. PAR-BC is funded solely by its members’ dues, which enable it to negotiate and enforce the collective agreement. Dues are automatically deducted from your pay. These dues are tax deductable and the annual amount is noted on your T4.
How can I get involved?
PAR-BC encourages members to be involved in the organization. Below are just a few of the ways members can be involved, contact for more details.
- PAR-BC is governed by the Board of Directors, which is elected annually by the membership. Nominate, vote or become a Board Member
- Each program is represented by an an annually elected Program Representative who sits on the Council of Program Representatives. Vote for or become a Program Representative
- PAR-BC has a number of internal committees focused on specific areas, including Advocacy, Communications, Distributed Medical Education, Finance, Governance, Negotiations, and Resident Physician Health and Wellness. Participate on a committee
- PAR-BC is also invited to send representatives to a number of external committees, including the Doctors of BC, CAIR and UBC. Represent your fellow residents on a committee.
- PAR-BC hosts a number of social and professional development events through out the year. Attend an upcoming event, or plan your own event with PAR-BC's assistance.
